With the pride of Europe at their backs and a chance to claim the first ever Grand Slam, our League of Legends team entered this year’s World Championship with a golden road ahead. Representing Europe as the LEC’s first seed, our team was charged with proving the strength of their region on the ultimate stage. We met this challenge head on, overcoming countless world-class teams and claiming a spot at the World Finals. Despite falling short in Paris and finishing second, their success confirmed the high-caliber performance fans can expect from G2 and Europe in the future.
Our journey began at home, with group stages being hosted in Berlin, Germany, where we secured second in our group. We then arrived in Madrid to face off against Damwon Gaming in a best-of-5 series. Through a fierce four game series, our boys proved to be too much for their Korean challengers, emerging victorious with a score of 3-1.
From then on, the competition only stiffened. Faced with the LCK legends in SKT-T1 and featuring lane matchups like Caps vs Faker and Perkz vs Teddy, our Semi-Final promised to deliver a close and thrilling series. There were no disappointments and to the roar of the Madrid crowd, we defeated the LCK Champions for the second time in 2019 in another 3-1 series.
Finally, at the end of the road, we matched up against Fun Plus Phoenix, champions of China’s LPL, in a final showdown to prove who was indeed the best in the world. After three hard-fought games, FPX proved to be too much, sending us home in classic G2 fashion; with our heads held high and the roar of the crowd behind us.
We are incredibly proud of our team’s accomplishments this year. We end this season with an additional two LEC titles, our first MSI Championship, and a second-place finish at Worlds. Congratulations to Wunder, Jankos, Caps, Perkz, Mikyx, Promisq, GrabbZ, Duffman, and Team Manager Mitch for putting the strength of Europe on full display for the world to see. We thank you all for your hard work and dedication throughout the year. In case you missed any of the action, we partnered up with Logitech G to document our journey through the World Championship.
